The Dark Side of the Glow: How Cheap, Poor-Quality Pool Lights Are Flooding the Market
How to control pool light quality?
The tranquil beauty of a nighttime swim, illuminated by a vibrant underwater light, has long been a hallmark of luxury backyards. However, an alarming trend is now surfacing: a flood of substandard swimming pool light products is overwhelming the global market, driven by a vicious price war that prioritises low cost over safety and durability.

Industry insiders report that dozens of new manufacturers, primarily focused on rapid production, have slashed prices on LED pool light units by nearly 60% over the past 18 months. While a quality pool light once retailed for $ 150–$ 300, today’s bargain-bin versions sell for as little as $30. At first glance, this seems like a win for consumers. But the reality is far murkier.
These cut-rate underwater light fixtures often use substandard waterproof seals and low-grade LEDs. The result? A growing number of failures—water ingress, flickering, and complete burnouts within weeks. Worse, there have been scattered reports of minor electric shocks, as cheap units lack proper grounding. One pool technician in Florida noted, “We’re replacing these cheap swimming pool light units three times a season. Homeowners think they’re saving money, but they’re actually paying more in the long run.”
The problem extends to a newer category: the underwater projector. Unlike traditional lights, these projectors create moving patterns and colour shows on the pool floor. However, low-end underwater projector models are flooding online marketplaces with fake five-star reviews. Many projectors have plastic housings that degrade under chlorine and UV exposure, cracking within months and shorting out internal circuits.

Experts urge buyers to resist the temptation of rock-bottom prices. “A reliable LED pool light should have an IP68 rating, a copper heat sink, and a two-year warranty,” says marine electrical engineer Sarah Kwan. “If a pool light costs less than a pizza, there’s a reason.”
Regulators in the EU and the U.S. are now considering stricter import standards for pool lighting. Until then, pool owners are advised to look beyond price tags—because when it comes to underwater illumination, cutting corners can lead to dangerous shocks, not just disappointing glows.
